Curriculum Mathematics

Curriculum Intent:

Southall School deals with a range of abilities within mathematics. Some students enter the school unable to count or recognize numbers whilst others may be comfortable with multiplying two-digit numbers together. Overall, the general mathematical ability level of students entering the school in Year 7 when comparing with nationally expected outcomes is low and would equate to a range of mathematical development of a EYFS through Year 2 student. A few students may have lower or higher ability than this depending on their complexity of condition. As such, the curriculum and associated schemes of work are tailored to incorporate P-level, key stage 1, key stage 2, key stage 3 and key stage 4 outcomes depending on the particular ability and needs of the student. The scheme of work includes differentiated activities between year groups, within year groups and within classes. As such, schemes of work provide the resources to tailor an individualized or small group approach to learning and are necessarily fluid in nature.

The Mathematics department at Southall School has adopted a Maths Mastery approach to learning based on the simple idea that showing someone HOW you do something is not the same as understanding WHY you do it. WHY you do something enables the learner to UNDERSTAND and APPLY that knowledge in future learning. Significant time is therefore spent developing deep knowledge of the key ideas that are needed to underpin future learning. The structure and connections within the mathematics are emphasized so that pupils develop deep learning that can be sustained. Repetitive small steps of learning not only enable pupils to see their progress and experience success but helps to consolidate skills before moving on. In turn, this consolidation of skills frees up working memory reducing reliance on the need to remember and recall facts.

KS3 Curriculum

These years are generally used to improve and consolidate the basic mathematical skills of each student. Most students entering the school in Year 7 will use White Rose Maths alongside some bespoke intervention strategies such as: Dynamo Maths (aimed at low achievers or dyscalculic learners), MyMaths and TTRockstars. Lessons for more complex students will vary depending on the approaches required to meet need. In all cases the individual teacher decides on the ‘best-fit’ for their class.

KS4 Curriculum

Most students in KS4 will continue to follow the Maths Mastery approach for their mathematics allowing for small steps of learning towards AQA Entry Level qualifications at Entry Levels 1, 2 or 3. Accreditation for more complex low ability groups will be achieved through different Entry Level qualifications such as Life and Living Skills. Those students who have proven they have the necessary ability (usually can attain an Entry Level 3 AQA qualification), focus, and appropriate coping strategies (students may have ability but struggle under the pressure of a long exam) may be entered for the AQA GCSE Mathematics award.

Curriculum Coverage

In KS3 the curriculum is primarily driven by the National Curriculum Outcomes for school years 1 to 6. For lower ability students or those with more complex conditions, coverage from the National Curriculum for P-scales or Early Years is used. In KS4 the curriculum not only encompasses the outcomes for KS3 mentioned previously but also those from Entry Level and GCSE programmes of study. This of course, depends on the ability and complexities of conditions of the pupil.

KS3 Maths Curriculum Implementation and Overview:

In KS3, pupils access daily maths sessions learn to develop understanding of number and calculating. The curriculum is delivered on a 2 year rolling program.
