Curriculum Design and Technology (D&T)
Curriculum Intent:
KS3 Design and Technology and KS4 Trade lessons are a mainly practical subject where we want to promote independence and skills that you will use throughout your life. The KS3 curriculum encourages creativity and develops inquisitive minds through designing, prototyping, problem solving and making products from Woods, Metals and Plastics.
You will learn a range of skills and techniques by using hand tools, power tools and machinery whilst making your products which will then be developed and broadened further in KS4 by working in a range of vocational areas such as: Painting & Decorating, Floor and Wall Tiling, Carpentry, Joinery, Wallpapering and Plumbing.
The soft skills learnt throughout the course will enable and empower you to use tools safely and effectively in your life whether it be putting up shelves at home, redecorating your bedroom, fixing leaking pipes, remodelling a kitchen, or putting up some wallpaper in your own home later in life. Once the basic principles of using tools is learnt it is a bit like riding a bike – you will never forget it!
Our ethos is to develop safety, accuracy and to build confidence in independent work in an environment where you feel safe to get things wrong!
Master crafts people must learn from their mistakes and once a craft is developed, you end up making beautiful products as a result!
This is a cycle we encourage, and we want to model here at Southall school in our Design and Technology and Trade department.
Expect a more relaxed learning environment compared to traditional classrooms that will replicate more of a wood workshop feel but also expect to work both physically and mentally hard where you will work on a range of different projects!
