Curriculum

At Southall School, we place the pupil at the heart of all we do.  Our curriculum is no different.   We aim to deliver an authentic curriculum from Year 7- 11 to help support and prepare our pupils for adulthood.

Each pupil will have a clear pathway which ensures they have maximum fun and engagement throughout their time at Southall.  We recognise that our pupils are unique as learners and may follow different pathways for different subjects – depending on their strengths.   In each of the three pathways, we strive for excellence, ensuring that the curriculum builds on what pupils already know, teaching the most useful skills and information in a logical progression towards an end point that is aspirational, challenging and achievable.  With the help of talented and dedicated staff, pupils are supported to push the boundaries of what they can achieve, celebrating their strengths and embracing gaps in their knowledge as learning opportunities.

Central to this is our passion for reading.  We believe that functional reading skills are a key to the world around us.  Reading is a high-profile part of everyday school life.  Whether reading for pleasure, to access qualifications or to be able to stay safe in the community, we aim to develop independent, confident readers across the school.

Lessons are fun.  Lessons are challenging.  Our learning environments are not quiet!  Whether exploring mathematical concepts through the mastery approach or the newly developed forest school area, we embrace opportunities for pupils to be inquisitive and collaborative across our curriculum.  This coupled with precise differentiation (both academically and based on need in line with EHCP targets) is central to creating enthusiastic, motivated learners who tackle a variety of tasks that are personalised, relevant and aim to prepare them for life after Southall.  For some this could be further education, the world of work, living more independently or importantly, becoming active citizens who contribute to their community.  To enable this, teachers planning is robust, creative and personalised, showing progression towards challenging end-points.  Whatever the desired end-point, at Southall we challenge pupils to be the best they can be – never putting a ceiling on their opportunities.

Our Southall School values thread through all we do.  Staff work hard and expect pupils to do the same.  Learning environments are inclusive to all, considering pupil learning styles and communication needs (often using visuals such as symbolised text).  Pupils work collaboratively and are expected to show kindness and help each other succeed.

Southall Values

We strongly believe Southall School is a family.  Staff and pupils work as a team to develop opportunities for pupils to take risks with their learning and lead their own learning where appropriate.  This is central to our pupils growing as people during their time at Southall, having the confidence to become more independent individuals, and developing the life skills they need to be successful post-16.

Together, we aim to make learning fun, exciting and purposeful for all.

Our Curriculum Offer:
